Project 1| Space of Connection
[October 11-November 1: 4 weeks]
The second project is a structure/pavilion that serves as a connection between two entities (buildings, floors, platforms, levels) in the LAU Beirut Campus.
The structure will be a circulation link between the two points and a hybrid space for student use.
The location of the project will stem from the student’s previous assignment.
Methodology
This assignment has a two-fold design challenge:
1-     Tectonics- relying heavily on model making in order to investigate the tectonics and material language of the proposed connection.
2-     Architectural Promenade Scenario- the analysis of approach-transition-and space-movement relationship of the proposed connection
1-Tectonics:
Using a material of your choice (cardboard, balsa, woodsticks, strings) you will imagine and test the rules by which your structure’s space and assembly system come into being.
In a rule-based design process, you will start by conceiving a 3-dimensional system of repetitive units.  You will establish your own rules to manipulate the material and create your unit. Then, the rules should include at least one deformation/joint strategy to set the duplication strategy that makes the whole system.
Deformation/Joint Strategies include:
Folding, Sectioning, Tessellating, Contouring, Hinging, Rotating, Cutting, Scoring, Bending,
You must then develop creative variations of how this space can be perceived/ experienced/ inhabited.
Think of how the variations of solid and void, transparency and opacity, change of direction in plan and section of the structure can influence the design.

2-     Space of Connection:

Using the introductory assignment as a reference, think of how your connecting structure will organize the usage, spatial experience, movement and connection, in the following order :
1-the approach towards the connecting space
2-the transition between the first and second entity ( could include multiple transitions, vertical as well as horizontal).
3-how the architecture is displaying the transition/passage/connection
4-the relationship between circulation and the tectonic system.

Deliverables for the first two weeks

1-Site Drawing and Analysis (due this Wednesday)
- Analysis of existing trajectories and circulation gaps (diagrams)
- Develop 5 different strategies of connecting sequences.
-1/100 plan(s) of the intervention zone (showing all the levels of the indoor and outdoor spaces you are trying to connect)
-1/100 section of the intervention zone
N.B. You can download the drawings of your selected buildings from the blog. The selected drawings must be printed to scale (1m on scale bar= 1cm). Then the area of intervention should be measured and reproduced.

2a-Deformation Research (Due this Friday online)
- Analyze examples of projects that used the following design strategies:
Folding, Sectioning, Tessellating, Contouring.

2b- Response to readings on the blog (Due Sunday night online)
a small paragraph of thoughts/ ideas/ reactions to one of the three readings posted on the blog

3- Tectonic Study (due next week): what will the system be/how will it work.
Determination of Unit and Rules
-1:1 model of the base unit that you will work with.
-1:1 model of the joint/ deformation strategies.
Development of System
-Study Model of multiple units
-Diagrams/ Models of the different trajectories in which a group of units replicate/deform to make the network.

4- Spatial Study (due next week)
10 different spatial variations of the system, and how they could coincide in your connecting sequence
The overall concept for your tectonic system and connecting space and how they both feed into each other.

Use models and diagrams to explain your concept.
Prioritize model making as a tool to think about your design.
Do not wait for an idea in order to start.
Write your design decisions on your sketchbook. You will read them to me as you explain your project.
Start posting on the blog your findings!

ANNOUNCEMENT

Hello Class
I have decided that it would be better if you ONLY submit the following tomorrow:
the diagrammatic plan and section (1/250) of your selected zone
5 scenarios of connection of your selected zone.

Bring your drafting tools with you tomorrow. You will draw the architectural plan and section of your zone in class. It is better, because i could assist you in defining the limit of your zone.
I will upload the drawings of all buildings to the blog in an hour.
